Developed solely in conjunction with the Film School Consortium, the Student Film Showcase has proven to be an exceptional opportunity for emerging filmmakers across Canada.
At the school year end, each FSC School submits a selection of their best films to the Canadian programmers at TIFF. The team at TIFF then curates a 90 minute program that is juried by industry leaders. Directors of the selected films are then invited to come to Toronto for a 3 day program of events that include a public screening of their films where awards are given for Best Film and Best Animation. As part of the 3 day event, TIFF hosts a welcome dinner, develops a workshop and/or panel forum with leading Canadian filmmakers, welcomes the filmmakers into their headquarters, and ends the event with an alumni luncheon with filmmakers from previous years.
The networks have proven incredibly successful with filmmakers forming new bonds and developing contacts across Canada – increasingly leading to long term professional relationships. In the spring of 2011, TIFF will also host the Student Film Showcase in their new home Bell Lightbox. The new venue will also open new opportunities for both educators and emerging filmmakers as part of TIFFs year round programming and Higher Learning Fridays.
