The Film School Consortium is very fortunate to have developed a number of formal partnerships with industry leaders in Canada that have benefited all member schools. At the same time, individual schools have additional partners whom they work with on school specific initiatives. In both circumstances, the benefits to our students and educators continue to grow each year.
If you are interested in developing a partnership with the Film School Consortium, please contact us. The following are a sampling of FSC partnerships developed since the founding of the Consortium:
En Route Film Festival
Since 2007, emerging Canadian filmmakers have been able to submit their short films to the En Route Film Festival. Selected films are then broadcast to passengers on Air Canada’s inflight entertainment system. Each fall, a distinguished jury then selects and presents four awards at an awards celebration. Awards are given for Best Short Film, Achievement in Animation, Achievement in Direction, and Achievement in Cinematography. Further information about the prizes, the jury and how to enter can be found on the En Route Air Canada website: http://enroute.aircanada.com/en/film-festival

In 2006, Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentary film festival and market, launched a unique program for recently graduated film students and those in their final year of study. Each year, Hot Docs selects 12- 15 candidates from Schools across Canada. Applicants must be referred by their professor or School.
The program offers a six day behind the scenes introduction to Hot Docs, including opportunities to meet and connect with filmmakers, broadcasters and distributors. Kodak
In addition to opening their doors at their headquarters for student tours and ‘Film and Lunch’ sessions, Kodak has generously sponsored numerous regional workshops for FSC members. They have also been a generous donor of awards at the annual Student Film Showcase hosted by TIFF and work directly with individual schools for both awards and general contributions to film programs.

Ontario Film Review Board (OFRB)
The Film School Consortium began a formal partnership with the Ontario Film Review Board (OFRB) early in 2005. During the 2005/2006 academic year, the OFRB launched the first Student Film Competition, a contest where Ontario film students are invited to produce a public service announcement (up to 60 seconds in length) about the Ontario film classification system. The competition also ran for a second time over the 2007/2008 academic year.
Student teams for the winning entries received both funding and mentorship to complete their PSAs. The PSAs were then aired at neighbourhood cinemas across Ontario as well as on the Rogers Pay-Per-View network. Discussions are currently underway to hold future similar competitions. For further information about the competitions, the winning entries from each year, and the OFRB, visit the website.
Ontario film students are also invited to the OFRB offices every year to to learn about the Ontario Film Classification system by sitting through a film viewing/classification with Film Board members.

TIFF
In the spring of 2004, TIFF hosted the first Student Film Showcase with a handful of schools that then comprised the Film School Consortium. Since then, the Student Film Showcase (SFS) has grown from an evening of film screenings for an informal group of FSC members to a formal public screening of films from FSC schools across Canada with workshops and networking sessions over a three day period. For more details about the Student Film Showcase and TIFF, click here.
Films from FSC emerging filmmakers have also been selected to screen at Sprockets, at the Toronto International Film Festival, and Canada’s Top Ten – all part of the year round initiatives curated and hosted by TIFF.

Other:
The Film School Consortium has also established linkages with other organizations on a less formal basis. These include contacts for information sharing , awareness building and general networking. A few examples include:
First Weekend Club
First Weekend Club is a non-profit organization and cross-Canada movie club dedicated to promoting and raising awareness for great Canadian films. Through regular electronic postings, the FSC provides information to its members on advance screenings and film alerts, including creating a “buzz” for the crucial First Weekend of a Canadian film’s release.
