Queen’s University’s Department of Film and Media provides several comprehensive undergraduate programs and concentrations that combine the academic study of cinema and other moving-image media with courses of instruction more oriented toward practical production. In addition to offering Major, Medial (involving equal credits in Film and another department), and Minor concentrations, the department also participates in two special field concentrations: with the Department of Drama, in Stage and Screen Studies and, with the School of Computing, in Computing and the Creative Arts.
Students who are admitted to the Faculty of Arts and Science may qualify in an open introductory course for enrollment in second-year courses in historical and critical approaches to film and media and in the fundamentals of production. A course at the third- and fourth-year levels tends to concentrate on increasingly specific areas, such as a national cinema, genre of media, or a thematic topic, based on the expertise of the instructor. Courses involving production similarly involve particular practices, such as documentary, fiction, experimentalism, and animation.
